[inspirational] Old mule - shake it off and step up

A farmer owned an old mule which

accidentally fell into a disused well.

After assessing the situation, the

farmer decided that neither the old

mule nor the well were worth saving.

So he called his neighbours together and got them to bring

mud with them with which to bury the old mule.

At first the mule was hysterical, but then it occurred to him

that every time a shovelful of mud hit his back, he could

shake it off and step up on it.

So this is what he did, blow after blow. "Shake it off and step

up," he repeated to himself.

In time, and to the astonishment of the farmer and his

neighbours, the old mule was able to step triumphantly over

the wall of the well.

Moral: When life throws mud at you, shake it off and step

up

The Art of Appraisal - review facts - comedy

I shared this with you previously. but worth reading again and have some laughs.... appraisal time LOL :-)

Just a forward for some laughs, no opinions, no comments ;)

The Art of Appraisal

Big Boss: This year your performance was good, excellent and outstanding. So, your rating is "average".

Kumar: What? How come 'average'?

Big Boss: Because...err...uhh...you lack domain knowledge.

Kumar: But last year you said I am a domain expert and you put me in this project as a domain consultant.

Big Boss: Oh is it? Well, in that case, I think your domain knowledge has eroded this year.

Kumar: What???

Big Boss: Yes, I didn't see you sharing knowledge on Purchasing domain.

Kumar: Why would I? Because I am not in Purchasing, I am in Manufacturing.

Big Boss: This is what I don't like about you. You give excuse for everything.

Kumar: Huh? *Confused*

Big Boss: Next, you need to improve your communication skills.

Kumar: Like what? I am the one who trained the team on "Business Communication", you sat in the audience and took notes, you remember?

Big Boss: Oh is it? Errr...well..I mean, you need to improve your Social Pragmatic Affirmative Communication.

Kumar: Huh? What the hell is that? *Confused*

Big Boss: See! That's why you need to learn about it.

Kumar: *head spinning*

Big Boss: Next, you need to sharpen your recruiting skills. All the guys you recruited left within 2 months.

Kumar: Well, not my mistake. You told them you will sit beside them and review their code, and most resigned the next day itself. Couple of them even attempted suicide.

Big Boss:*stunned* (recovers from shock) Err...anyway, I tried to give you a better rating, but our Normalization process gave you only 'average'.

Kumar: Last year that process gave me 'excellent'. This year just 'average'? Why is this process pushing me up and down every year?

Big Boss: That's a complicated process. You don't want to hear.

Kumar: I'll try to understand. Go ahead.

Big Boss: Well, we gather in a large room, write down the names of sub-ordinates in bits of paper, and throw them up in the air. Whichever lands on the floor gets 'average', whichever lands on table gets 'good', whichever we manage to catch gets 'excellent' and whichever gets stuck to ceiling gets 'outstanding'.

Kumar: (eyes popping out) What? Ridiculous! So who gets 'poor' rating?

Big Boss: Those are the ones we forget to write down.

Kumar: What the hell! And how can paper bits stick to ceiling for 'outstanding'?

Big Boss: Oh no, now you have started questioning our 20 year old organizational process!

Kumar: *faints*

Story of Appreciation - for parents/managers

Story of Appreciation

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made
the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic
achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the
youth answered "none".

The director asked, " Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.

The director asked, " Where did your mother work?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, " Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes
before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and
clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.*

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His
mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did
that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother
shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his
graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked: " Can you tell me
what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"

The youth answered, " I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished
cleaning all the remaining clothes'

The Director asked, " please tell me your feelings."

The youth said, Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today. Number 2, by working together and helping
my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, " This is what I am looking for to be my manager.
I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of
others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's performance improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop "entitlement mentality" and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others. For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement. He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?*

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person. The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.

Money and self-control: Spend smart, save more

Money and self-control: Spend smart, save more

Spending money has got many influencing factors. But all these influencers can be classified into five broad spending influencers.

1. Emotions

Your emotions play an important role in your spending pattern. Positive feelings like happiness, fun and joy can influence you to spend more on entertainment and gifts.

Negative feelings like envy, jealousy, shame, stress, depression and frustration can influence you to spend more on smoking, drinking, buying things you don't really need, relaxation and healthcare.

2. Traditional thought

This is because of you belief system and your thought process. Like somebody saying 'I need to buy a silk saree every year for my wedding anniversary'. Or, 'I have to bust crackers in Diwali.'

These are all the classic examples of how your traditional thoughts will influence your spending pattern

3. Society

Society in which you live will have more influence on your spending. For example, you have to buy a car as all your colleagues come to office in their own car. Or, on the occasion of your kid's birthday, you need to arrange gifts for all his/her classmates. Or, you should be watching this movie, on a first day first show.

This influencer is caused by friends, colleagues, neighbours, relatives, and club members. At times, even advertisements and promotional offers like a discount sale can make you to spend more.

4. Habits

Habits formed when you were growing up can make us spend impulsively. Generally this will be for our sensual pleasures. Spending on movies, music, eating out, smoking, drinking are the best examples for this influencer.

5. Commitments

This includes paying off your debts and loans, commitment towards family like school fees, buying groceries and other provisions, paying rent, paying for medical insurance etc. You are committed to pay these expenses.

By tracking and analysing your each and every expense, you will be able to identify the influencers that make you spend money. Here are some strategies to overcome these influencers and spend smarter:

1. Control your emotions

Instead of spending money, you can control your emotions by doing something else like doing yoga or meditation, watching comedy shows on TV, going to a temple or beach. You need to solve the root of the emotion. You need to do an introspection and keep a balanced mind always. A balanced mind is key for spending smarter.

2. Self talk

You need to consciously change your thought patterns to come out of traditional thinking.

'I don't really need a saree for every wedding anniversary'. 'I am not a kid; so I need not burst crackers on Diwali'. Such auto suggestions will change your thought process and help you to be able to really prioritise your expenses.

3. You are unique

You were born original, do not die a copy. There is no need to feel bad if you don't get to spend or buy things like your friends or people around you. You are unique and special in your own way. You need to discuss with your family and friends about 'How to live happily by achieving compromised spending patterns'.

4. Learn and unlearn habits

The unwanted habits that make you spend more can be unlearned. Good habits which make you spend smarter can be learned. Habits can be learned and unlearned. But you need to know it is not a quick fix. It involves a process and a commitment.

A habit is an intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire. Knowledge is 'what to do and why to do it'. That is we need to spend less to save more and become richer. Skill is in how to do it. Desire is the motivation, the want to do. What are we trying to achieve by spending less? How is it more important to us than spending more? In order to make something a habit in our lives, we have to have all three.

5. Unwanted commitments

You can't avoid certain commitments like groceries, schools fees. But you can definitely discontinue unwanted commitments like the club membership in which you are not actively participating in and not getting any real gains out of it; the chit fund you have impulsively enrolled in with a jewellery shop.

Money not spent is saved. These above strategies will work only if you truly have a desire for future financial success. You need to be disciplined and persistent in the course of implementing these strategies. The more you practice smart spending, the wealthier you become

11 ways to get out of debt, stay out of debt

In spite of steady, regular income there are so many individuals who live paycheque to paycheque, carry forward their credit card outstanding, and fail to save anything for retirement. If you are one of them, now is the right time to take action to not only come out of debt and stay out of debt.

It is not only possible; it is unbelievably achievable.

1. List down all your debts

You need to take stock of all your loans. It could be your credit card dues, personal loan, car loan, housing loan, education loan, loan from fixed deposit, loan from insurance policies, loan from your employer, hand loan and so on.

For each and every loan you need to note down how much you owe, the present interest rate, equated monthly installment and number of months to be paid.

2. Negotiate for lower interest rates

If you could negotiate the interest rate and bring it down then you can come out of debt faster.

Most of the credit card companies come forward for negotiation if you really show interest in repaying. They need not run after you to collect the debt. It will reduce their expenses.

So they will be happy to negotiate. Balance transfer offers from credit cards are also a way to reduce your interest rate.

Replacing a loan with another is known as refinancing debt. By doing a refinance it should reduce your interest rate and it should bring down the time you are in debt.

But most often people go for refinance that provide them lower EMI but increasing the time they stay in debt.

4. Categorise your debt

Housing loan can increase your net worth over a period of time. Housing loan gives you tax benefit also. For a businessman car loan provides some tax benefit.

Based on these factors a debt needs to be categorised. This will help you in comparing different loans

After sorting out various loans, now you can comfortably prioritise the loans. Obviously this will be based on the interest rates and tax benefits. At times paying off a small loan first can give you a lot of motivation to get out of debt.

6. Creating and executing a debt payoff plan

You need to create a debt pay off plan with different scenarios. So that you can find out how some more savings or a different repayment order will help you get out of debt faster. When creating a plan, you need to choose one which fits your attitude.

Otherwise, you may not execute it properly.

You need to make a vow that you will not be adding any fresh loans, till you come out of all your debts completely. Think for a moment, how you will feel when you become debt free.

This will give you a lot of positive energy to come out and stay out of debt.

8. Postpone buying major assets

Buying a property or any other assets need to be postponed till you get out of debt. With your new ownership comes the new, probably large and unpredictable expense.

This can make you deviate from your debt pay off plans and at times the consequences could be uncontrollable

There are two groups. One group of people uses credit cards responsibly.

That is they will repay the credit card dues in full when they receive the bill. The other group will pay the minimum amount due and carry forward the balance amount due.

If you belong to the second group, you need to stop using credit cards temporarily.

Take out and keep your credit cards in the locker. Once your financial situation and buying habits improve, then you can start using your credit cards again.

10. Change your spending habits

Being in debt obviously means that you have been living beyond your means. The solution is very simple.

Spend less than you earn and you will get out of debt soon. You need to change your spending habits. Then only this simple solution will be achievable.

If you buy things you don't need, you'll soon sell things you need. Don't save what is left after spending; spend what is left after saving

You need to inform all your family members and dependents about your debt status. Then you will be able to take decisions with much more clarity.

Moreover, if your family members know about your debt, they will also change their spending habits and support you in getting out of debt faster.

Consider the postage stamp: Its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there.

Similarly, you need to stick to your debt pay off plan till you get out of it.

Fwd: Parenting tips for working couple

Some good tips from one of the workshops on "Parenting challenges for working couple".

We know most of them but it is good to refresh them !
Please forward …

  • Feeling guilty about not spending time with kids is a –ve feeling à leads to frustration, anger and may end of showing on kid !! so don't feel guilty
  • Mapping/coaching  house maid to feed/take care of kids properly – insecurity feeling by mother/parents. Natural, but need to be flexible and watchful.
Expectations from man about parenting have changed in modern times !!
  • No scientific evidence says children are harmed when their mothers are working ! In fact, children of working couple become more independent/grow self-esteem
  • Energizing yourself before going home (listen to music, little bit of exercise, giving up smoking, boozing) – make conscious effort !! MOST IMPORTANT
  • Free up your parents who are looking over the kids – esp on evenings/week-ends. They also need breathing space !
  • Need to be on same page (both parents) – kids should hear same message from both parents !
  • Build network in the apartment or office for support (doing !) –
  • Peer influence on –ve things (making kids emotionally strong and resistant to –ve forces from the beginning)
  • Ask for support | allow people to help | let your family do things "their way" | Learn to let go | Prioritize-better time management – U CAN DO IT !
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate with your wives
  • Divide parenting tasks (exam preparation, pick up, etc.,)
  • Parenting helps managers to manage people better at work , your management starts from home ! You become more patient and no other problems look larger than parenting
  • Spending 'time' with the kids is the wonderful 'gift' to any kids on this world ! spend quality time, no distractions (do it regularly  and consciously)
Bribes vs. incentives – be sensitive to difference
  • Find a tutor so that you can find extra time to do some other things for kids (esp working couple)
  • Avoid sentences/words which will break their self esteem ! [ex. you always break the things !]
  • No fighting among parents in front of the kids
  • Rewarding them when they show good behavior (but don't tell them in adv – as it become bribe). This will encourage them to do more better things next time and look forward to get rewarded
  • Sharing between siblings/parents [children are very manipulating ] – be consistent with the Don't compare with other !
  • No beating as they learn as this is the way to get things done from their peers/friends. So avoid it !
  • Spend quality time 30-40 mnts as soon as you reach home and then get to your work !
  • Takes more than 1 hr time to eat – set the limit/boundaries (as children want to do it for their attention), make it smaller meals, even if it is same likable food, give it. (same thing for everyday), palak puri, graded (be creative)
  • Family that eats together stays together ! Make it a point to have at least one meal together per day !
  • Keep promises !
  • Answer the child's questions ! I started reading mahabharatha/Ramayana becos of kids as I need to feed the info
  • Surrounded their env with books, toys, sports –
  • Play with them and engage with them in some hobbies ! This is the best way to teach many things ! All the work and no play makes jack a dull boy !
  • Be passionate and positive about parenting !! Ignite them for better future !

EVEN TEMPER - ANGER

AN EVEN TEMPER – SOMETIMES IT IS RENDERED AS 'ANGERLESSNESS' WHICH IS NOT VERY HAPPY. A BETTER RENDERING WOULD BE THE CAPACITY TO CHECK AT THE RIGHT TIME THE WAVES OF ANGER AS THEY MOUNT UP IN OUR MIND, SO THAT WE DONOT MANIFEST ANGER IN OUR ACTIONS.

IT WILL BE ALMOST UNNATURAL TO EXPECT THE MIND TO BECOME INCAPABLE OF ANGER. BUT NO EMOTION SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO OVERWHELM US TO SUCH A DEGREE AS TO RENDER US ALMOST POWERLESS. THIS ANGER ARISES OUT OF AN INSUFFERRABLE IMPATIENCE WITH OTHERS**

IN SHORT, NO-ANGER DOES NOT MEAN  'WITHOUT ANGER' BUT ONLY KEEPING, AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, AN EVEN TEMPER.

** ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY, BY THEIR THOUGHT, WORD OR DEED COME TO INJURE OUR INTEREST, OR INSULT OUR OWN SELF-EVALUATION.

FW: Sand and Stone - short inspiring story :)

Sand and Stone

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one, who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After the friend recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

suffering from problems - osho

"In our inner world, we go on avoiding problems which we cannot solve. We try to forget problems which we cannot solve, and we begin to focus our mind on problems which we can solve. Because of that, your chief diseases go underground. Ultimately, you are not even aware of them, and you go on fighting with phony problems which are not real problems. These phony problems take much energy and dissipate your energies, destroy them, and you remain the same because you go on fighting with the leaves."

How Far Would You Go to Control Employee Social Media Use?

:-)

...............

This week, FaceTime Communications introduced a new tool called Socialite, which is a security management and compliance solution for social networks. Available in Software-as-a-service form or as on premises solution, its aim is to give companies control over social media features and communications for users on corporate networks.

...............

Earlier this month, Megan C. Winter with law firm Fisher & Phillips LLP, suggested these 10 tips for employers who want to be proactive about employee issues arising out of social media:

1.  Get familiar with Facebook, LinkedIn or other sites that are popular with your employees.
2. Update current company policies.
3. Consider whether your company environment needs a specific social media policy.
4. Prohibit use of the employee's company e-mail address.
5. Discourage your managers from "friending" their subordinate employees.
6. Immediately get a copy of any post that is the subject of a complaint.
7. Only use social media for employment screening in a consistent way.
8. Warn managers to follow standard policies for recommendations on LinkedIn or other professional sites.
9. Be aware of possible protected, concerted activity.
10. Above all, use common sense

Especially those fond of Maggi...

'

CORRECT WAY
OF COOKING NOODLES'
The correct way to cook instant noodles without harming our bodies and health:

Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it's ready to eat.

This is the
WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.

By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG, it will change the molecular structure of the MSG, causing it to be toxic.

The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have eaten the noodles.

CORRECT METHOD:

1.
Boil the noodles in a pot of water.

2. Once the noodles are cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.

3. Boil another pot of water, add the cooked noodles into the hot boiling water and then turn off the stove.

4. Only at this stage when the stove is off, and while the water is very hot, add the flavouring powder into the water, to make noodle soup.

5. However, if you need dry noodles, remove the noodles and add the flavouring powder and toss it to get dry noodles.

Dietician's Note:

If you buy plain hakka noodles which you make, you initially need to boil in water and discard the water. This will soften the noodles but to prevent it from sticking we need to add a tbsp of oil and also the noodles are deep fried partially to make them crunchy and then dusted with flour to prevent them from sticking while boiling. Hence when you buy the noodles they are already made unhealthy and this is the type we use to make stir fry noodles and the regular Maggie too is made the same way, plus they add MSG / Ajinomoto and other chemical preservatives.

A large number of patients with ages ranging from
18-24 years are ending up with pancreatitis either as a swelling or infection of the pancreas due to regular consumption of instant noodles... If the frequency is more than 3 times a week, then it is very hazardous...

Please share this info and help save a life

We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in time for dinner…
We walked to school, or sometimes we even rode our bike.
We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other…. How? No one knows…
We lost teeth, broke arms & legs, we got cuts and bruises and bloody noses…. nobody complained as we had so much fun, it wasn't anybody's fault, only ours
We ate everything in sight, cakes, bread, chocolate, ice-cream, sweet sugary drinks, yet, we stayed skinny by fooling around.

And if one of us was lucky to find a 1 litre coca cola bottle we all had a swag from it & guess what? Nobody picked up any germs....
We did not have Play Stations, MP3,  I-Pods, Video games, 99 Cable TV channels, DVD's, Home Cinema, Mobile phones, Home Computers, Laptops, Chat-rooms, Internet, etc ... BUT, we had REAL FRIENDS!!!!
We called on friends to come out to play, never rang the doorbell, just went around the back…
We loved being let loose in the big bad world…without bodyguards…
We played with sticks and stones, played cowboys and Indians, doctors and nurses, hide and seek, soccer games, over and over again…

We had freedom, success, disappointments and responsibilities. ..
Most of all, we learned to respect others…

Are YOU from that generation?? If that's the case, email this to all your friends from the same era…
Maybe this message will help them forget the stress that surrounds us these days….and just for a few moments puts a smile to their faces as they remember what life was really like in the good old days…… Don't you think they were GREAT DAYS.....I sure think so.
I Just can't stop smiling, I am sure U will have the same ..................
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
